They are also banned from entering the university grounds. The university has managed to verify that one of the 400 publications is indeed taken from a student's thesis, the student is not even named as co-author, but thanked in a footnote.Debora Weber-Wulffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16036864220530629908noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091218950079982154.post-57801464878962260012022-05-21T14:02:23.996+02:002022-05-21T14:02:23.996+02:00Debora, thank you for the synopsis of Days 1 and 2...Debora, thank you for the synopsis of Days 1 and 2 of the conference. I am currently preparing a second publication of my doctoral dissertation which was first published 27 years ago and looking back on my work from then with a fresh perspective based on a new interest in the history of the development the subject as opposed to the subject itself, I am appalled that I did not include more detailed attributions of standard material and that none of the referees required me to amend the work to include such even in the case of results of which they had been the originators. I suppose one has a very different perspective depending on whether ones primary focus is the subject itself or its history. All that Denecke and Wismath needed to do is state which parts of the exposition followed Gumm's original German text and acknowledge which parts are translations having obtained permission and including Gumm as a coauthor if required.Z4chst3rhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03159130625819079809noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091218950079982154.post-131129142690215012017-10-03T12:08:35.500+02:002017-10-03T12:08:35.500+02:00It is difficult to understand who is looting the b...It is difficult to understand who is looting the biography written by French writer Haiden. Aust has used Haiden's text and converted the work from present tense to simple past. But Aust himself complains that people are trying to loot Haidens work. It looks like a case of copy paste were the names of the writers are changed and someone's work is copied by many others.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12803962071311813683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091218950079982154.post-68121636402592106872017-10-03T06:24:15.981+02:002017-10-03T06:24:15.981+02:00According to the article published by Marcus Roth ...According to the article published by Marcus Roth in Taz, the biography of Hitler is used to describe Stefan Aust again and again changing the tense from past to present looting somebody elses work which is offendable.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12803962071311813683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091218950079982154.post-46354512754957701782017-08-03T18:59:43.508+02:002017-08-03T18:59:43.508+02:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Debora Weber-Wulffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16036864220530629908noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091218950079982154.post-77534608857002660592017-08-03T18:54:28.843+02:002017-08-03T18:54:28.843+02:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.ginanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9091218950079982154.post-15586810517779532412017-06-03T09:51:27.390+02:002017-06-03T09:51:27.390+02:00Dear Prof Weber-Wulff:

Next thing it becomes a ...Great, Writing Boot Camp. Next thing it becomes a lecture and you can get credit points for taking it.
Seriously. For me, the whole purpose of an academic education is getting you in touch with science. This includes formulating hypotheses, doing research, learning formal methods and yes, writing something down in the established and widely accepted way. If you can get one semester close to your thesis without having learned even the basics of writing then something went horribly wrong. Then you totally missed the point and should probably turn around and start over. (I am exaggerating a bit. Sorry.) But if I read your article correctly this is now the default for students? I am shocked.
I would be interested why your students "don't read academic literature"? Because if you do you inevitably get a feeling for the correct way of writing. This is not restricted to citation and references but also on creating a sound structure and finding the right tone. I once attended a lecture where we were required to read one paper a week and then discuss it in class. At that time I was mainly focused on the topics (algorithmics class, very complicated) and I only later (when writing papers myself) realized how much I had soaked up during the course.
I think scientific writing (at least the basics) is not something you should explicitly learn but something you should just get used to during your studies, without even noticing. Seems like this does not happen. I do expect that a university student would be able to find a book on a topic they don't know something about and read it. But students should know about this before coming to university: In Berlin the topic of correct citation is to be discussed and practiced in German class in the ninth grade in school. Under Thierry Mandon, as the french Minister of Research, the handling of scientific fraud allegations has changed. He asked a scientific integrity panel to investigate alleged plagiarism by Dr Klein. I have been contacted by Prof Michel Cosnard, president of the High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES) who is also the president of the investigation panel.
In France, we will have soon a national office for research integrity (OFIS for Office Français pour l'Intégrité Scientifique).
The issue has raised the question of self-plagiarism and its definition.
